FiOS New York City: On Schedule for 100%

54% of New York and 67% of Manhattan were passed by FiOS by the end of 2010, on schedule to do 100% of the city three years from now. The NY Times quoted one an analyst calling the franchise an "historic concession" in 2008. New York was the first large city in the Western World guaranteed 100% fiber. Verizon has met essentially every target for FiOS since 2005 and now is ahead of schedule on LTE deployment (92% 2013.) A company actually delivering on schedule isn't exciting enough to often be considered "news" but I'm glad to include this story - even if they haven't reached my apartment or Jennie's yet.
Paul Cosgrove held up Verizon's TV franchise for the city until they agreed to universal service and Verizon had no choice but to give in. “We wanted to make sure they didn’t cherry-pick the wealthy areas of the city, so we set up some milestones so service gets distributed in an even way,” Cosgrave told Ken Belson in the NY Times. This was smart protection, as Verizon in 2010 postponed 2M lines of FiOS and cancelled 4M or 5M that were planned for 2011-2014. If Cosgrove hadn't held firm, much of New York would never be getting FiOS.
Nicholas Sbordone of NYC DoITT writes me they've confirmed the coverage "by conducting random building and street spot-checks of our own choosing, variously inspecting manholes, rooftops and basements to verify." Verizon - Jennie on Central Park West and me up by Columbia are waiting for you.
